I require graphic design for use on hard cover, paperback and ebooks for both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Additionally, I require a thumbnail version for use in book search for by Amazon and Barnes & Noble searches. The final work must encompass graphic design that is readily usable for paper books and ebooks.
KINDLE DIRECT PUBLISHING (KDN)
According to my understanding, Kindle Direct Publishing accepts two types of files for cover images:
JPEG, or .jpeg
TIFF, or .tif(f)
From my reading of the guidance provided by Kindle requires a minimum of 625 pixels on the shortest side and 1000 pixels on the longest side. Additionally, Kindle will not accept any image larger than 10,000 pixels on the longest side. As for color, it is my understanding that product images are displayed on the Amazon website using RGB (red, green, blue) color mode. Finally, Kindle recommends that cover art with white or very light backgrounds can seem to disappear against the white background. Adding a very narrow (3-4 pixel) border in medium gray will define the boundaries of the cover.
BARNES & NOBLE (B&N)
According to my understanding B&N direct publishing accepts both .jpg and .png files although TIFF are also acceptable. The cover image file must be between 5KB and 2MB. According to B&N guidance both the height and width should individually be at least 1400 pixels.
All of the technical information set forth above regarding the requirements of KDN and B&N are based on my research. After researching same I believe that a cover design within the pixel parameter set forth above and created using TIFF will suit me purposes.
I am obviously deferring to your creative expertise to formulate a design that will complement the book I have written. I have some ideas for the front and back covers, which are given purely as ideas and not requests, as my artistic acumen extends no farther than the sketching of stick figures.
Idea #1 Perhaps a front cover with one of the Fallen perched above a landscape, which depicts the horror of medieval warfare. In the book, the devastation engulfs both the cities and countryside, so the options here are varied. The back cover could display a ravaged landscape with a road running through it lined with prominently displayed crucified persons.
Idea #2 The Fallen are Angels but are depicted throughout the book as without wings. Perhaps a front cover with one of the Fallen clothed in a cloak that is blown up and backwards in the shape of wings. Another variation of this idea is an image of one of the Fallen with shadows in the shape of wings visible to the rear of the image.
Idea #3 Perhaps a front cover with imagery of the Fall of an angel or angels. This could be combined with the back cover displaying a ravaged landscape with a road running through it lined with crucified persons (seen from a distance).
Idea #4 Perhaps imagery which incorporates some of the more prevalent symbols contained in the book (i.e., chalice, moon, bible, sword, arrow, etc.)
It cannot be stressed enough that these ideas are offered from a position as sheer ignorance of graphic design or even good taste in art.
I thought it might be helpful to set forth some of the more prominent characters in the book to assist in your creative process.
The Fallen Angels are portrayed as wingless cloaked men of enormous strength. The only distinguishing feature is that their eyes are black orbs.
The Protagonist is a sailor whose weapon of choice is the long bow, although he is no stranger to the sword.
Other Significant Characters
A middle-aged (some gray hair) Catholic monk plays an essential role in the formation of the confederation which resists the provocations of the Fallen.
Young attractive female (brunette) plays an vital role in setting in motion and executing mankind’s resistance to the nearly unstoppable force of the Fallen.
The Army of the Fallen
The army of the Fallen is known as the Legion. The symbol of this force is the moon in its various stages. The moon is white on a green backdrop. The men of the Legion are equipped akin to a classic roman legionnaire, utilizing spear and short sword.
The Horde is the description of throng of infected humans. The infection causes them to become wildly violent with a propensity for human and animal flesh. These zombie-like creatures are distinguishable by their milky white eyes.
Important Images and/or Symbols Found Throughout the Book
The Full Moon
The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse
Medieval Ship (Holk) three masts
Bow and Arrows
For Questions or Input in your Creation
I will make myself available to you for any questions you may have regarding the creation of the design. I will make it a priority to promptly respond to any inquiry.
