I am an author of sci-fi/fantasy stories looking to self-publish a full length novel. I'm thirty-one, married, and have a six year old son. I've been writing full-time for four years now. My focus has been in short fiction as well as contributing to online vlogcasts. I'm one-half of the writer's association Mister Moonshine's founding members, and I volunteer running a creative writing club.
Was ist Ihre Vision?
I need a cover for a novel. It's a space opera with elements of fantasy, and it is intended for young adults, adults, and fans of sci-fi adventure stories and dark fantasy. I need front and back 7"x10" cover with a 1.08" spine. The title of the book is "Resplendent Princess". It is the first book of a planned five-volume series called "Memories of Alsavon" and is written by Stuart R McCafferty. The story takes place several centuries in the future, long after Earth has been shattered in an event called the Cataclysm. Roughly ninety-five percent of the story takes place aboard a starship on its way to Mars. There are aliens, dragons, cyborgs, mystics, and space pirates. I would like the cover to give a sense of foreboding. The characters have existed in a world where morality is relative and not black and white, but they will be set against a truly evil enemy. The focus should be on the main character of book one, Athrun Williams. He's a young man in his early twenties with a darker olive-skinned complexion. His hair is light brown, and his eyes are violet. He is the security marshal aboard the passenger liner Resplendent Princess, a starship owned and operated by an alien corporation. His uniform is blue with a long coat that reaches to mid-thigh and fastens up the left side. He wears epaulets on his shoulders to single him out as the head of security. Williams is intelligent, tough, and a rare good man in a corrupt galaxy. Throughout the course of the story, he gets battered and beaten repeatedly while doing his best to protect his crew and the liner's passengers against alien creatures and sadistic warriors, so feel free to rough him up. Don't worry, he can take it. I'm open to looking at a variety of styles. When writing the story, I drew from many different sources of inspiration, so I'm not fixated on any one particular brand of artwork. Star Wars, Firefly, Lord of the Rings, Ghost in the Shell, Mass Effect, Babylon 5, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and even Dungeons & Dragons all have their fingers in there somewhere. If you want to try anything from a photographed actor to an anime inspired rendition, I'll give it a look. As for the typeface for the title, I'd like it to be bright and dynamic, something eye-catching. A mention of "Memories of Alsavon: Book One" should show up. Just stick my name somewhere near the bottom in little letters; nobody can pronounce it anyway. On the back cover, I would like the following: Old Earth has been shattered by the Cataclysm, and humanity has spread among the stars. Aboard an interstellar cruise liner called the Resplendent Princess, a force of adventurers known as starhoppers guard the safety of the passengers. As a forgotten enemy rises to reclaim the galaxy, the security marshal must do all he can to protect those in his care from the deadliest threat the Confederation has ever faced. Enlisting the aid of alien mystics, a cyborg soldier, and a crew of space pirates, they may yet not be enough to stand against the dreaded malice of the firstborn. The Void always wins in the end
This series is dark, emotional, gritty, and fun. It was a blast to write, and I hope it's just as enjoyable to read. Though some elements are borderline silly (one character could be loosely described as Malcolm Reynolds with firebending), I did try to give these an in-world weight. A security officer aboard the Princess is an alien tough girl, but she is also dealing with depression due to her status as a social outcast. The main character suffers from undiagnosed PTSD. Issues of racial identity, religious persecution and zealotry, and civic corruption are explored through allegory. Within the scope of the Alsavon series, these things make sense and are a part of the universe. I approached them with the gravity I felt they deserved and avoided jotting it down as mere backstory before getting to the cool explosions. Some might read about a battle with a cyborg minotaur and think it's a bit much, but the characters react to it as if it's the most terrifying thing they could come across aboard a derelict star liner. I believe that's what makes this story special. The original setting gave me the freedom to present serious topics I deeply care about in a way that can be both entertaining and thought-provoking. The characters are as real and human (or otherwise) as I could make them. That said, it's also a fun read. While flawed, most of the characters are genuinely likable, and there's a good measure of humor throughout. Adding to this is a plethora of exciting action sequences, involved mysteries, romance, personal triumphs, and a vibrant, living galaxy that I have been developing for the past ten years. Resplendent Princess is just the beginning. Each volume from here on out will raise the stakes for the heroes and for the galaxy higher and higher until the stars themselves tremble. This and the upcoming books of the Alsavon series are a love letter to the science fiction and fantasy adventures that inspired me to become an author. I would like to thank you for helping me present it in the best way possible.
