I'm interested in a front and back design for an upcoming book. This book is entitled, "The Kick Ass College Guide to Taking Tests.” As you can see by the name, the book is written for college students interested in improving their test taking abilities.
I have just a few guidelines as to the design.
First off, by using the words “Kick Ass,” I’m trying to create a bit of an edgy feel to the book, thereby separating myself from traditional how-to guide books. I want to avoid the appearance of a business or college text book.
Secondly, when books are sold online, such as Amazon, the initial search for a book brings up a thumbnail image of the book along with the description. It is important that the title of the book can be read when looking at the thumbnail image. The text doesn't necessarily need to fill the entire cover, but at least be readable when looking at the smaller image on screen. This is a marketing thing, and I believe that more books are sold when the customer can quickly identify the title and understand what the book is about.
Lastly, while I’m not opposed to the use of photographs in this cover design, I’m hoping that the “flavor” of this design will carry over to the other books planned for this series and may also be used as the basis for the webpage. A recognizable graphic design, strong colors and Kick Ass feeling is what I envision will work best. But, if you have a creative idea that might work, I’m open to taking a look.
Other than what I have described above, I don’t have any other guidelines for this design. I’m looking for edgy but not silly, and something that will appeal to young college types looking to Kick Ass.
