Target audience - readers of literary fiction
Was ist Ihre Vision?
A book cover for my book, Dance For A Dead Princess. The current cover is too dark and makes the book seem to be a romance novel. The book is actually a complex plot of mystery and love story and is literary fiction. You can read the summary of the plot at http://www.amazon.com/Dance-For-Dead-Princess-ebook/dp/B00C4HP9I0 I have two cover ideas. One is a grand piano with a red rose and a tiara left on top of the piano. I attach two ideas and one concept of a tiara. The hero of the novel, a powerful man who is also a frustrated musician who has lost all the women in his life whom he has loved, sits up late into the night, thinking about his lost loves and playing Ravel's haunting melody, Pavane pour une infante défunte (Dance For A Dead Princess.) This is the way he eventually wins the heroine's heart. I am looking for art that captures the sense of loss and longing that the Pavane creates in the listener. (You can hear the short melody on YouTube) The hero has lost his mother (a famous concert pianist), his wife (the most beautiful woman in England), and his closet friend, Diana, Princess of Wales. He plays the pavane, as he tells the heroine, for "all the lost princesses." The view of the grand piano can of be a more complete view of the piano than the attached photos, although I like the focus on the keyboard. Second concept: the ancestral home, Burnham Abbey, where the story takes place. The model for the Abbey is Hever Castle. I attach two pictures. You might want to look at the book covers for the author Mary Stewart to see how houses are used as the theme of her covers. I am less convinced that this is the option I want because it can't convey the emotion that option one can convey. This option could also possibly show a woman in Tudor dress in a back view contemplating the house. The inner story of the novel is a lover story set in Tudor Times. Again, I am less inclined to this option, but I might be surprised by a creative design. The book was a Forward Reviews Finalist and a Beverly Hills Book Award Finalist, and I attach pictures of the awards seals that I want displayed on the cover in a tasteful way to set the book apart.
The background of the current cover is too dark. I would like a lighter background. Also, I am primarily looking for a cover that, as mentioned above, conveys the sense of deep sadness and longing for lost love that is one of the main themes of the book. I think option one will best meet this standard, but I would be interested in looking at ideas based upon option two as well. As to both options, I would like a lighter feel to the cover. As mentioned, the current cover is much too dark. I need both an e-book cover for Kindle, Nook and Smashwords and paperback cover for CreateSpace. Quotations that could be used for the back of the CreateSpace Cover: "This, for me, was a landmark book in that it was the first work that I read that clearly crossed many genres." Review by "Nobody Important" "It truly is the work of an excellent and extremely talented storyteller and writer . . . " Review by "Top Shelf Books" "Deborah Hawkins writes from her heart and I have a strong fascination for author who do this because you become privileged to take a small piece of the author once you have read her work." Review by “Mommy Adventures with Ravina” "This beautifully crafted story - Dance for a Dead Princess by Deborah Hawkins, will forever remain with me. It was an absolute pleasure to read. Once you start, it's impossible to stop. Review by “Aspiring Book Reviews”

I loved working with this designer. She had a great idea of my concept from the start and was open to making any tiny changes I wanted. I have worked with her before on another project that she was not the winner on but I loved her work then too. I think she brings a fresh eye to designs that others don't.
