The magic in the series is tied to ancient runes and how to use their symbology to create magic. Because they are complex and take time, Colby created an APP called #Magic. This app has an AI that interprets hashtags and assembles the runes stored in a database to then send back to the user. The user provides the flow of energy to those runes to create the spells and release the magic.
The second book, subtitled "Control ALT Delete" is based on the quest to unlock the secrets left behind by the protagonists father inside a locked journal. There is a recurring symbol (picture attached) of the wheel of time that is significant to the core of the protagonists true power. In the book, Colby (protagonist) and his five friends also having magic, discover they are somehow connected and it relates to the constellation of Orion.
They are on a spring trip to the Yucatan to observe the equinox, while a solar eclipse is also occurring on the morning the equinox starts in the East. With their #Magic app compromised by the virus that spread the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) in book 1 of the series, the kids have to rely on cached spells and their natural abilities.
During the climax sequence, Colby discovers a betrayal that has destroys his already weakened control over his magic and emotions. In an unexpected outburst, Colby's magic is rebooted (control alt delete) and he has a new power that is linked to time (the symbols of his father's watch and the wheel of time artifact). He wears the watch but the artifact is fitted into the cover of his father's leather bound journal which has 7 intricate locks on it which open separately to reveal new information.
