Note: Before getting into the 'details' I want you to be aware that I
am going to go to the extreme on specifications of the characters and
the setting. I believe the more information you (the designer) have,
the easier you will find it to express your creativity in this
project. As long as you keep this cover in the realm of classic
fantasy art, I'd like to have a look at it! Feel free to darken the
mood a bit if you feel it works in the illustration.

Book title: Neverqueen
Author: Scott Appleton
To be queen was never her destiny...
Arthensil City, the refuge of humanity along the Eiderveis River.
Under the guidance of Lord Ostincair humanity thrives. Only select
hunting parties dare venture into the deep forests along the river,
for a corruption spreads from the wizard's mountains in the south to
beast and creature alike.
But Ostincair's men are about to make a discovery that will change
the face of the river. A child long thought dead will be found, and
her innocence will spread hope to two races.
Reader endorsement: "Neverqueen was beyond awesome! Great plot, great
characters, and great action. There was nothing more I could’ve
asked for." -Joseph Ely

(Important note: please leave a space in the lower right hand corner
of the back cover for the bar code.)
Standing on the sandy bank of a river is a human-hybrid; a young
black woman 18-years-old with white feathered wings on her back. It
might be cool to include a large white birch tree in the foreground,
In the river are wee mermaids (versions of a mermaid that are only
about 2 to 3-feet-long and have a small dorsal fin on their back.
are colorful, some purple, some green, etc.). IMPORTANT NOTE: If the
mermaids' colors are shown in the illustration the colors should be
subtle. We do not want vibrant or neon mermaids. (-;
The black girl's hair is white, wavy, and long enough to touch her
lower back. She is partially turned so that she faces away from us,
looking into the distance. She is wearing a leather jacket and
trousers and a dagger is sheathed on her arm. She is holding a crown
in her hand. The crown is made of two twisting metal vines, one of
white gold and one of yellow gold, and a large ruby is set in its
face. She should be a beautiful individual with softer and finer,
rather than larger features.
The wee mermaids are playful and friendly.
You can feel free to vary the level of detail in order to make sure
the winged humanoid is prominent so that she is not washed out by the
swath of scenery.
Background: A river approximately 20 to 30-feet wide wends its way
between yellow-sand shores. In the distance the dark peaks of three
mountains are visible (no snow on these mountains). Long patches of
grass run the length between the river and the surrounding forests.
Many of the trees have thick trunks as if the forest is older.
If you feel like getting into extra detail in your illustration, here
are some suggestions: Some of the trees can be white birches as those
do figure in the story. There can be wildflowers.
Weather: Bright and sunny afternoon.
BACK COVER IMAGE/ILLUSTRATION IDEA:
After reviewing some of the questions I thought I'd add an idea for
those of you who would like to incorporate an illustration onto the
Please note, however, that I'm not in love with the idea of having a
back cover illustration. These tend to make the back cover copy too
busy. But if you want to play around with that option I'm open to
being wowed by the unexpected. (-:
Scenery would work best, I think. This is a heavily forested area.
Incorporate white birch trees and oak trees, maybe some forest
underbrush and bushes.
But the focus of the back cover needs to be the text. Don't let any
illustrating in this area wash out the legibility of the back cover
