Looking for a cover for the print and ebook version of a novel: The
League. It's an urban fantasy that borders on super hero in an
anti-hero way. It is about the people that inhabit our world that we
don’t see or know because they are a little different (due to
super-human abilities of one kind or another). None of the characters
run around in fancy uniforms. They are more anti-hero than heroes,
just trying to find a place in society where they belong.
Aimed at a teenage to young adult audience.
Design brief is below the synopsis (bare with me!)
Humanity doesn’t except people that are different. Even the most
amazing abilities make the public uneasy. That is why The League is
There are people everywhere in this world that are a little bit
different to the rest, but we never notice them, because if we did, we
would be afraid of what they could do. The League was a group of young
people with special abilities and an ambition to make their city a
safer place. But when one of them is killed during a mission they lose
their resolve and go their separate ways.
Athan Harper was one member of The League and he still lives a quiet
life in the shadows and in a dimension that links the minds of all
normal humans. When he decides to use his gifts to help some coma
patients wake up, he discovers that their dreams were synthetic and
that it is part of an extensive corporate plan that has been in the
making for decades. He must locate his friends and find this new
enemy. One evil man’s ambition will fulfill an ancient prophecy and
tear holes in the fabric of reality. Athan will discover that the
world is not what it seems and that humans aren’t the only
intelligent life in the universe.
Cover: I'm hoping to get a cover which has a bit of style - not
necessarily just photo manipulated characters. In fact, I don't think
a front-on character cover will work here. But then again, if you've
got the magic touch I'd love to see what you can do - just not with
models looking directly at the reader! I imagine either something with
a dark atmosphere or something that utilizes a symbolism or a
vintage/modern classic look. The book style fits somewhere between
urban fantasy and new weird.
Some ideas might be to incorporate a silhouette or a stylised cover.
The main character experiences two different worlds in the story. One
is our own, the other is a fleshy organic landscape filled with bone
like structures creeping tendrils. It probably bares some resemblance
to the paintings of Yves Tanguy. This kind of fleshy organic design
could be utilised in the background or somewhere on the cover.
Most of the story takes place in a the city of Melbourne, so a city
background might work. The actual city of Melbourne isn’t necessary.
Audience: The audience I am aiming at is young adult or adult
readers. People that are interested in the supernatural, mysteries and
action will hopefully find this story appealing. The actual story
isn’t entirely linear so it twists and turns and there are alternate
realities. There is a hint of a boy girl romance but it is very vague
and not a focus in this particular book. In the sequels this may come
to be more of a focus.
Characters: In the prelude to this book a group of six people utilized
their super-human abilities to form a crime fighting team, but when
one of their members is killed they face their own mortality and
disband. This book picks up with the character Athan, who is trying to
lead a quiet life out of the public view, but mysteries happenings
force him to join one of the original group. Together they discover
that the other ex-members of the their group are in danger and that
there is a corporate evil that attempting to destroy them and enslave
Athan Harper: he is the main character and the book follows his
action in the present for the most past, but there are flash backs to
the past and chapters that focus on other members of ‘The League’.
Athan is about average height and build with short but unkempt brown
hair. His main physical trait is the black business suit and white
shirt with thin black tie that he wears throughout the book.
His particular ability is that he is able to step through people’s
physical bodies and into their minds. From here there is able to
access another dimension that links all human minds into an endless,
constantly changing organic landscape. This is soft, like skin,
covered with enormous structures that vaguely resemble bone or organs.
Similar the paintings of Yves Tanguy, or some of Dali’s work.
Altogether it is a surreal place. From this dimension he can find the
minds of any other humans he knows and use their bodies as a conduit.
So he can travel from one place to another through people.
He is reserved and sometimes sarcastic, but socially he grows in
confidence as the story goes on.
Dereck Lucas: he is the opposite to the main character Athan Harper.
He looks very similar, but he wears a dark shirt and is very slick and
stylish. He has a twisted corporate mind and is utilizing he
networking skills and control to build a machine that will open a
gateway to a hellish dimension of beings that feed off human emotion.
When the beings come forth they will feed off the human race making
them weak and susceptible to suggestion, putting them under his
Colours: for the colours of the cover I’d like something either very
dark and foreboding or something simple and silhouette in a modern
classic style. Even a comic style could be effective .
I am looking to create three covers for the series so far, so the
successful designer could expect another two gigs in the next few
Notes: other covers that i really like the look of for ideas-
Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, Stephen Hunt's Court of
the Air series, Raymond E. Fiest's Conclave of Shadows, Chuck
Palahniuk's books (Survivor, Choke, Pygmy), Ben Langdon's The Miranda
Contract, Hugh Howly's Wool, the Twighlight series (they were good
covers), Mattew Reilly's books, Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Neil
Gaiman's American Gods, Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. The Madmen
opening credits is also good.
Title: The League (in a strong font).
Thurston Bassett Publisher Details: Kalamity Press. I've attached the
files for the logo which would be good to see on the back cover and a
small version on the spine - if it fits your design of course. If it
clashes, happy to leave it off.
Thanks, and please let me know if you have any questions.
