More than 387 million children globally are waiting for the opportunity to learn to read. Literacy leads to better health, broadens employment opportunities, and creates safer and more stable societies.
While books and reading materials are essential to boost a child’s literacy potential, most children lack access to these resources in languages they use and understand. This challenge is known as the “book gap.”
With a mission devoted to narrowing this gap, All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development will launch Begin With Books, a global prize competition that will challenge innovators globally to assemble cost-effective packages of high quality, accessible titles in underserved languages (including sign languages). Winning innovators will be asked to upload the titles they develop to the Global Digital Library (GDL), a web-based platform that makes free, high-quality early learning resources available in languages children and their communities use and understand.
