The babel fish is from a comedy science fiction series called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (very silly British humor - imagine Monty Python in space). The babel fish is the way all the different intergalactic species communicate. It’s a small, yellow fish that goes in one’s ear, and it’s both a transmitter and receiver of brain waves, so you can communicate with any other species. I can’t imagine a better metaphor for music – something that transcends language, even species – something we all understand innately.
Once the name was chosen, I could imagine a cartoon yellow fish, wearing sunglasses and headphones and sitting at a recording console. But wow - that’s a lot of stuff to cram into a logo!
So then I thought of something simpler - just a fish? In a fish bowl? No, that represents confinement. How about sitting on a rock, like the ones you see at a rocky beach? He’s next to freedom (water/ocean), and we have incorporated the unusual domain suffix (the website will be BabelFish.rocks instead of .com) into the image. This logo idea would help people remember the URL (http://www.BabelFish.rocks).
But I'm not "married" to any of these ideas. I envision a yellow, cartoon fish wearing sunglasses and somehow tied to music, but I'm open to anything, even something abstract.
